On its alpine plateau, Matsumoto is surrounded by the high peaks of the mountain ranges. The town has one of Japan's finest castles, set in spacious grounds planted with cherry trees. You'll also find crafts and ukiyo-e (wood-block painting) museums, and outside of town a wasabi farm. If you walk to the castle from the JR eki, you'll pass through the old section of Matsumoto on the way, with its many stone kura (ware houses), which are typical of the early Meiji period. They are unusual in their use of irregular stones held in place by mortar.

Matsumoto-Joh (Crow Castle)

Matsumoto-Joh for its atypical black protective walls, Matsumoto's castle was built in 1504, during the turbulence of civil wars. The surrounding moats and walls remain, and the imposing five-tier, six-story donjon (inner tower) is the oldest surviving keep in Japan. And it is quite simply a handsome castle. While it is an exercise in agility to climb and walk through all six stories, the effort adds to the feeling of what life as a samurai was like during feudal Japan. The views from the sixth story are inspiring, with a broad panorama of the surrounding alpine peaks.Karasu-joh is a very popular attraction; be there when it open to avoid the overwhelming crowds. You will have to wear the slipperes provided while walking through the castle.
